East coast
A slow morning in Cherating
No summit, no schedule: just a quiet beach, two kids, cold water and the first light over the South China Sea.
On the east coast, the best part of the day is over by nine. After that the sun takes over. So we went down to the sand at 6:45 a.m., when the beach belonged to a few fishermen and a lot of crabs.
Kids are honest testers. The Little Trail went into the sand, into the sea and, briefly, into a bucket of crabs. It came out with a scratch and still-cold water.
By the time the sun was properly up, we were back on the veranda with roti canai and nowhere to be.
Keeping water cold at the beach
Fill bottles with ice the night before and top up with water in the morning. Keep them in the shade, not in the car, and they will stay cold well into the afternoon.
